University of South Africa - Call for nomination of members of the Unisa Council

The University of South Africa (Unisa) plays an important role nationally and makes a significant contribution to South Africa’s international standing. The University Council governs the University in terms of the Higher Education Act of 1997(as amended) and the Statute of the University.

Council has a fiduciary, governance and policy-making duty and is ultimately responsible for the determination of Unisa's strategic direction. 

Organizations, interest groups and individuals are hereby invited to nominate up to three (3) candidates to serve on the Council of Unisa. The nominees should be persons who have a broad spectrum of skills in one or more of the following areas: Accounting, Audit, Finance, Legal, ICT and Engineering, with preference given to candidates with general business and entrepreneurial skills, skills in enterprise development and skills in the built environment. The appointments shall be for a period of four (4) years as required in the Institutional Statute, from the period of appointment in 2021 until 2025.

The successful candidates shall fall within the category of external members of Council. Accordingly the provisions of section 27(6) and section 27(7)(e) of the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997 (as amended) are applicable. No employee or student of the University may be considered for the appointment.   

Nominations should be in writing and should be accompanied by a short curriculum vitae of the nominee. The nominee must indicate his/her acceptance of the nomination in writing and also indicate in writing his/her willingness to serve on Council and on the committees of Council in the event that he/she is appointed to Council.

Council will appoint members from the ranks of the nominees that have been shortlisted by the Nominations and Governance Committee of Council (NGCoC). It must be noted that the Council members thus elected will serve on the council in their personal capacity and not as representatives of any interest group.
