Department of Mechanical, Bioresources and Biomedical Engineering

In-Service (WIL) Training

The majority of students who have completed theoretical subjects for their Diploma in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering often lack opportunities for work-integrated learning (WIL). WIL is compulsory practical training to be offered to engineering technicians after completing the theoretical subjects. In-Service (Merseta) training is aimed at integrating academic learning with its application in the workplace. It is full-time training based at the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering laboratories at the University of South Africa (Unisa). The training is focused on workshop activities and is design project-based. The aim of the project is to offer training and expose students to the industrial-scale setup. Our laboratories have all the required equipment to conduct or perform the activities for the work-integrated learning programme. The training activities are designed to satisfy the requirements of the work-integrated programme as defined by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DMechE) provided full personal protective equipment (PPE). PPE includes a dust mask, work suit, safety glasses, gloves, and safety boots. All students have a toolbox and access to a locker for storing their toolbox and personal items. Some In-Service (Merseta) students are shown in Figure 1.
