Unisan receives top honour for his contributions in the field of analytical chemistry

Prof Lawrence Madikizela from Unisa’s Institute for Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability (iNanoWS) was recently awarded the Raikes Medal at the 44th South African Chemical Institute National Convention, held in Stellenbosch from 8 to 13 January 2023.

Raikes Medal

The medal is named after chemist Humphrey Rivaz Raikes, who was Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand from 1928 to 1954. The award is made to a member of the institute, under the age of 40 on 31 December in the year of the award, whose original chemical research shows outstanding promise, as adjudged by publications in reputable journals. It is further stipulated that the research will have been performed in South Africa. A monetary prize of R2 500, together with a suitably inscribed scroll, accompanies the medal.

As Raikes Medal recipient, Madikizela delivered a lecture based on his current and previous research works in the subject field of analytical chemistry. His lecture was entitled "Fate of Pharmaceuticals in the South African Environment: Past, Present and Future Research".

Madikizela joined iNanoWS in January 2021 as a senior lecturer and was promoted to associate professor in January 2022. He is a highly published academic scholar, and supervises master’s and doctoral students.
