Happy Africa Day! I-SET hosts Nigerian learners at robotics workshop

Inspired towards Science, Engineering and Technology (I-SET), a community engagement flagship project of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET), hosted an I-SET Robotics Workshop for a group of learners and educators from Nigeria on 25 May 2018, appropriately enough, also Africa Day. The group consisted of delegates of the International Children-in-Science-and-Technology Conference.

The group of thirty educators and learners were invited to a robotics workshop at the I-SET Robotics Hub on the Unisa Science Campus.
The purpose of the workshop was to bring the exciting world of science to life. The I-SET project was included on Day 4 of the conference programme. The theme of the bi-annual conference was Creating innovative strategies for children in science and technology towards sustainable development goals.

The workshop displayed tables that presented a number of exciting robotics models that demonstrated the importance of automation and computation, as well as the importance of using robotics to teach and explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts. There were also opportunities for learners and educators to engage in a number of hands-on robotics activities. The importance of 21stcentury skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and teamwork were also highlighted.

The Children-in-Science-and-Technology Conference awarded I-SET a platinum award for recognition and support towards popularising science and technology among children in Africa.

I-SET thanks the organisers of the event, Dr Lizzy T Orogojimo and Dr O I Ojo from the Department of Civil and Chemical Engineering in Unisa for the collaboration to make the workshop possible. Plans are in process to raise at least one I-SET Club Robotics team in Nigeria by the end of 2018.

I-SET is a Unisa Community Engagement Project aimed at inspiring young people and their communities’ interest in science, engineering and technology through fun activities. These activities are mainly centred on children building robots from Lego blocks and programming them to achieve certain outcomes.

As part of the community engagement it trains the coaches, mentors and leaders of the children in setting up and promoting their teams, building and programming the robots and teaching the children how to do research.

About CSET: The College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) is a college of Unisa and is made up of the School of Science, the School of Engineering and the School of Computing. The college offers general academic and career-oriented degrees, diplomas and certificates in a range of science, engineering and technology disciplines.
