Unisa Language Festival

Signature Banner (001).png

Since 2004 the College of Human Sciences has hosted the annual Unisa Language Festival, the only one held in South Africa, to celebrate the diverse culture and languages spoken in South Africa. In the past, the Festival showcased all the different languages, cultural background and experiences through dramatic arts, poetry and music, dance and exhibitions, however this only reached a very limited number of participants.

In 2017 the project was enhanced to make an even larger impact by reaching more learners with a different modus operandi. Which was the incorporation of a Roadshow inaugurated in 2017 and a Multilingual Spelling Bee inaugurated in 2022.

Road Show

The Language Festival Road Show envision a South Africa where linguistic diversity is embraced and celebrated. Through interactive school visits and artistic expressions, this initiative not only highlights the beauty of multilingualism but also equips learners with insights into language careers. The University of South Africa's commitment to fostering linguistic understanding and cultural appreciation is embodied in this innovative endeavour, promising to shape a brighter future for generations to come.

Multilingual Spelling Bee

The Multilingual Spelling Bee is more than just a competition – it's a celebration of languages, cultures, and the power of words. Through its unique format, the event strives to build bridges between communities, inspire a lifelong love for languages, and contribute to the broader goal of promoting multilingualism in South Africa. With the University of South Africa at the helm, this innovative endeavour promises to be an unforgettable experience that leaves a lasting impact on participants and spectators alike.
