Other

Dr FM Teane holds a Doctor of Education Degree in Curriculum studies. The focus of her doctoral studies was on Curriculum development and implementation. As a PL1 Life Sciences teacher and Unisa student she served as a mentor for her colleagues and her guidance had helped them navigate their role as teachers during the issuing of a plethora of educational policies in South Africa for an example, she assisted teachers with the development of formative assessment tasks in line with the new educational policy (Outcomes-Based Education). The Curriculum leadership role was enhanced by the knowledge and skills she acquired during her masters’ degree study in curriculum studies. She was appointed as a marker and a senior marker of Grade 12 Life Sciences end of the year National papers for many years and that sharpened her knowledge, skills, and teaching methodology of the subject Life Sciences.

Embarking on the doctoral study deepened her knowledge about Curriculum issues and since then she has been sharing her acquired knowledge with teachers in the Northwest and Mpumalanga provinces. A partnership was forged between Unisa (Dr Teane) and the Life Sciences teachers in the above two provinces through an engaged scholarship titled: Institutions of higher learning’s interventions to enhance Curriculum Implementation by teachers in schools.

Dr Teane’s achieved expertise in Life Sciences earned her a position as a Life sciences subject advisor. She is currently a senior lecturer at Unisa in the Department of Adult Basic Education and Youth Development. Apart from being a Diploma Programme Manager in the department she coordinates a masters’ degree module. She has published book chapters, conference proceedings and journal articles locally and internationally. She has supervised students to completion and has reviewed papers from other journals. With her honors degree in psychology as well as her certificate in Trauma counselling and trauma management she offered free and voluntary counselling services  in the community at large.
