The Department of Adult Basic Education prides itself for aligning itself to the ethos of the Freedom Charter, that the doors of learnng and culture shall be opened to all. We have a strong staff complement of lecturers, senior lectures and professors, with a research acumen as evident is their research profiles.
Welcome to the Department of Adult Community and Continuing Education (DACCE) in the College of Education. My name is Dr Georgina Gomba. It is my pleasure, as Chair of the Department, to extend a warm greeting to all our current and prospective students, partners, alumni, and stakeholders. Our department is rooted in a deep commitment to open distance learning and to the transformative power of adult and community education. We believe that education is not merely about acquiring qualifications, but about empowering individuals and communities to participate meaningfully in social and economic development.
Our vision is to be a leading academic department in open distance learning – one which epitomises excellence in the provision of Adult Education, knowledge and skills to youths and adults, enabling them to play meaningful roles in the socio-economic activities of their respective communities, the country and the continent at large. We strive for academic excellence, relevance and responsiveness, ensuring that our programmes speak directly to the lived realities of the communities we serve.
As a people-centred department, our mission guides our daily work and engagement. We are committed to making basic education available and accessible to youths and adults, particularly those in rural and disadvantaged communities. We prioritise learner-centred teaching and comprehensive academic support to equip our students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary for employment, job creation and self-employment. Furthermore, we actively engage in community-based research and outreach initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable community development.
At DACCE, our students are at the heart of everything we do. We are dedicated to supporting you throughout your academic journey and to creating enabling environments where you can reach your full potential. Through quality teaching, impactful research and meaningful community engagement, we seek to contribute to social justice, lifelong learning and inclusive development.
We invite you to explore our programmes, engage with our work and become part of a department that is committed to academic excellence and community transformation.
Dr GKB Gomba
