Prof A Maiwashe -Tagwi
Chair of Department of Agriculture and Animal Health
As Chair of the Department, I am delighted to welcome our students, staff, alumni and visitors. Our department is committed to pushing the boundaries of agricultural science knowledge systems, while cultivating a dynamic environment where academic excellence and cutting-edge research flourish.
Our academic staff are renowned globally for their impactful contributions across a broad range of agricultural science disciplines, including Agricultural Economics & Agribusiness, Plant Science, Animal Science and Animal Health.
The department is contributing significantly to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) careers by integrating technology, engineering and science to address global challenges like animal health and welfare, food security, climate change and sustainable resource management. Research towards innovations in agricultural technology (AgTech), such as precision farming, biotechnology, sustainable engineering practices, enhanced crop production and environmental stewardship, is a priority. Careers in agriculture offer practical applications of maths and science in areas like soil analysis, weather prediction and resource optimisation, making it a vital field for advancing STEM education and research.
We are incredibly proud to host the Nelson Mandela African BioGenome Flagship Project (AfricaBP). We also take great pride in our vibrant research community and the pioneering work that continues to emerge from our department.
Warm regards,
