EMSSA Regional Graduateness Project 2014

Ensuring the post-university future of students

Aimed at improving the academic throughput of Unisa students in the Economic and Management Sciences Student Association (EMSSA), the EMSSA Regional Graduateness project provides students with academic support, career advancement information and capacity building.

EMSSA has been in existence since 1998 and was formed in the College of Economic and Management Sciences with the aim of helping members attain academic excellence and prosperity. While EMSSA does provide an extrordinary platform that brings together the business sector, Unisa and students of the College of Economic and Management Sciences, many students lack the necessary capacity to fully utilise it.

To build this capacity, the EMSSA Regional Graduateness project is a career and skills development programme that facilitates the enhancement of professional and networking skills amongst EMSSA students.

Workshops are organised each semester in the various EMSSA regions to ascertain students’ understanding of post-study life and the challenges relating to academic and career advancement. These workshops assess the degree to which EMSSA students have gained the attributes of a graduate student, hence the project’s focus on graduatedness. The higher the level of graduatedness, the greater the student’s chances of employment are. Thus the project also aims to lower unemployment rates amongst postgraduate students.

Due to the extensive reach of EMSSA, the project is coordinated by the National Executive committee to ensure quality control by seeing to it that all regional structures implement a uniform and organised programme. The regional executive committee facilitates the sessions in their respective regions, which include sites all over the country.
