Purpose: This course provides a broad and comprehensive perspective on the evolution to next generation wireless networks. Third generation (3G) and fourth generation (4G) wireless standards are examined along with resource management and quality of service (QoS) in these networks. The architecture of the two major 3G cellular-based standards (UMTS and cdma2000) are examined and differentiated. In addition, the two principle 4G standards, LTE and WiMAX are studied. Key enabling technologies for wireless network evolution are also identified and briefly discussed. Purpose: This qualification is primarily complementary study related and to guide the post graduate student with regard to guidance in research methodology and with regard to research project planning. The purpose of this module is mainly to provide students that wishes to pursue with a post graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or to follow a future career in Research and Development in Electrical Engineering with adequate knowledge and skills background. The project part of this module will also introduce the students to important aspects of research project planning and will include a substantial component of project design and synthesis. It will thus address scientific research, ethical principles and behaviour in research, and the nature, methods and process of conducting quantitative and qualitative research. It will also endeavour to equip students with: (a) a sound understanding of the key issues regarding the conduct of research and professional presentation of research findings in a variety of contexts; (b) the capacity to interpret, evaluate, judge and apply the concepts, principles and techniques of the scientific methods of inquiry, interpretation, analysis and presentation of data; (c) the ability to engage independently in the research process and present the findings in an academic research report; (d) the ability to think critically and holistically when dealing real-life challenges when conducting research and presenting research reports. This module is intended for all students who are pursuing studies on an honours level.
