Pre-requisite: MHS2611
Purpose: Qualifying students will be able to discuss historical facts about vocal music from the Seventeenth Century to the Present. Students will be able to differentiate between various vocal styles and traditions, including: Oratorios, Lieder (Art Song), Operas, Operettas, Musicals and Popular Song. In addition they should show understanding of the relationship between the vocal traditions studied, their cultural history and the role of economic and socio-political dynamics affecting their development, the roles of leading composers, and the relationship between vocal music and other (musical) arts and the environment from which they emerged.
