Purpose: This module prepares students with a comprehensive and systematic knowledge of negotiation in the employment negotiation landscape in South Africa. It equips students with knowledge, skills and concepts needed to promote effective conflict and dispute resolution between potentially cooperative parties within the legislative and organisational policy framework of collective bargaining. The purpose of this module is threefold. The first is to explore the fundamental context and theories of conflict, dispute resolution, industrial action, negotiation and collective bargaining. The second objective is to develop practical negotiation skills applicable to a broad range of employment relation contexts. The third objective is to develop negotiation skills by working within and through group exercises, which involve making make sound theoretical judgements based on evidence and an ability to think epistemologically.
