UNISA to celebrate IORA Day 2024

Approved for public release.

Date: Tuesday, 05 March 2024

The Department of International Relations & Cooperation (DIRCO), in partnership with the College of Economic and Management Sciences (CEMS) at the University of South Africa (UNISA), is proud to announce the commemoration of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) International Day Celebration 2024. The event will take place on March 7th, 2024, at the UNISA Muckleneuk campus, Function Hall at Kgorong Building, from 12:00 to 14:30.

With the theme "Enhancing Sustainable Indian Ocean for Future Generations: Our Ocean Our Life," this event underscores the pivotal role of the Indian Ocean in the economies, livelihoods, and cultural identities of the states within its boundaries. As the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) marks its 27th anniversary, it has become an essential platform for socio-economic cooperation in the region, spanning from Africa to South and Southeast Asia, and Australia in the Eastern Indian Ocean.

Since its establishment in 1997, IORA has made significant strides in fostering regional cooperation. The Jakarta Concord, adopted in 2017, outlines key objectives in priority areas such as maritime safety and security, trade and investment facilitation, fisheries management, disaster risk management, and more.

Key achievements of IORA include its growth in membership, high-level political endorsement, strategic dialogues, and partnerships with organizations such as ASEAN. The organisation has also prioritized initiatives like the Nelson Mandela Internship Programme, reflecting its commitment to youth empowerment.

The IORA Day Celebration UNISA Public Lecture aims to disseminate awareness of IORA's mission and achievements among the populace of the Indian Ocean Region, particularly in South Africa. By bringing together academics, students, researchers, government officials, and foreign missions, this event seeks to enhance IORA's visibility and cooperation among member states.

Thematic areas for discussion include IORA's vision for 2030, an African perspective on the Indo-Pacific, and capacity building in the Indian Ocean Region. Through collaborative efforts, IORA aims to ensure a sustainable future for the Indian Ocean and its communities.
