College of Accounting Sciences results in SAICA's 2021 ITC

Approved for public release
Date: 05 July 2021

The University of South Africa (Unisa) College of Accounting Sciences would like to congratulate its students for the outstanding results in the professional assessment examination of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA). The first sitting of the 2021 Initial Test of Competence (ITC) professional exams were written in April, with the results released, 2 July 2021

Unisa Students who participated in the 2020 CTA (Certificate in theory of accountancy) examinations have achieved excellent results. What is notably commendable is that of the 983 African students who passed, 315 were Unisa students representing about a third of the population of African candidates. This is a great achievement which continues to highlight the significant contribution the university is making to the overall transformation of the profession.

While the Unisa pass rate of 39% remains significantly lower than the national average of 64.5%, Unisa has single-handedly contributed the majority of candidates that have passed in nominal terms, marked at 625. The university is committed to continue to initiate and develop programmes to support our students with the necessary support for a better chance of passing the ITC exam. Candidates attempting the ITC examination on first attempt have achieved a 70% national pass rate with a 34% average for Unisa first time attempt candidates. A notable improvement was also observed in the repeat candidates pass rate.

“The college of Accounting Sciences would like to extend gratitude to all the lecturers who participated in the Unisa ITC Board Exam Technique Workshop that seeks to provide exam technique sessions in preparation for students writing the ITC. Your commitment to serving the students is appreciated. The ITC results are a clear indication of Unisa’s contribution towards the CA profession in South Africa” said Ms. Mandisa Gandela, Acting Executive Dean, Unisa College of Accounting Sciences.
