Voice competition reaches final stretch

The finalists of the Classical Category of the Unisa International Voice Competition have just been announced.

They are the South African sopranos Thembinkosi Magagula, Palesa Malieloa and Cecilia Rangwanasha. They will compete on Saturday 03 February at 19:00 in the Z K Matthews Great Hall.

They will perform with the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra conducted by the Vito Clemente from Italy.

The finalists will each perform a programme of about 30 minutes consisting of their own selection of arias. Their programmes include some of the most exquisite music written for voice, such as Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, Pie Jesu from Fauré’s Requiem, Ebben? Ne andrò lontana from Catalani’s La Wally, and Summertime from Porgy and Bess by Gershwin.

The final round of the Jazz Category is taking place on Friday 02 February at 19:00 in the Z K Matthews Great Hall. Cynthia Abraham (France), Ellie Bignall (UK) and Tshepo Tshabalala (SA) are the three jazz vocalists who will perform with a rhythm section consisting of pianist Melvin Peters, drummer Kevin Gibson and bassist Marc Duby.

The first prize in each category is R200 000, the second prize is R130 000 and the third prize R80 000. The Prize Giving Ceremony will take place on Saturday after the final round of the Classical Category.
