Recently, the Unisa Midlands Region Communication and Marketing Unit, together with the Department of Tuition Support and Facilitation of Learning and the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES), visited the Thabo Mofutsanyana District Municipality in Phuthaditjhaba.
The purpose of the visit was threefold:
The discussion on WIL placement centred around Unisa students who are studying towards an agricultural management qualification at Unisa. The municipality’s Agricultural Directorate expressed some interest in exploring the possibility of absorbing a certain number of Unisa students for WIL purposes.
The discussion then expanded into other opportunities that both parties could embrace by exploring current and future collaborative areas, such as student placements, recruitment of potential students, catalytic niche areas and community engagement. The municipality also highlighted that they would like to channel their staff to study through Unisa, since our CODeL model appears to be more convenient for them.
Unisa looks forward to culminating this engagement with the municipality by signing an official memorandum of understanding (MoU). Once all the necessary groundwork has been completed, the management of the Midlands Region, together with all the other departments involved, will officially sign the MoU. This will yield positive results for the university and its students.
In his presentation, Dr Mutambuli Hadji from Tuition Support and Facilitation of Learning emphasised the importance of recognition of prior learning (RPL) at Unisa. He explained that through the RPL process, individuals could be admitted to undergraduate, postgraduate, master’s and doctoral studies offered at Unisa, based on the level and extent of the knowledge they have acquired previously through work experience. He concluded his presentation by providing guidelines for the process involved in applying for RPL at Unisa.
The visit ended with presentations on Unisa’s career offerings and the CODeL approach to the general municipal staff by Gugu Masinga and Winston Rampedi from CAES and the Midlands Region, respectively. The aim is to break down silos and work collaboratively with other departments to contribute positively towards the objectives of the institution.
