Unisa makes a significant contribution to transforming the chartered accounting profession

Unisa, through its College of Accounting Sciences (CAS), is rapidly changing the face of the chartered accounting profession towards a far more representative demographic. Alumni of the College of Accounting Sciences (CAS) recently achieved outstanding results in the professional assessment examination of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).

The first sitting of the 2021 Initial Test of Competence (ITC) took place in April, and the results were released on 2 July 2021.

CAS alumni dominate

Unisa’s former students for the Certificate in The Theory of Accounting (CTA) presented by CAS achieved excellent results. What is particularly commendable is that of the 983 African candidates who passed, 315 were Unisa students, representing about a third of the population of African candidates.

This great achievement highlights the significant contribution Unisa is making to the overall transformation of the accounting profession - the university single-handedly contributed the majority of candidates who passed in nominal terms.

Candidates prepared through examination technique workshop

CAS is committed to continuing its efforts to initiate and develop programmes to support its former students, thus improving their chances of passing the ITC examination. Candidates who attempted the ITC examination for the first time achieved a 70% national pass rate, and Unisa’s first-attempt candidates achieved a pass rate of 34%. Moreover, a notable improvement was observed in repeat candidates’ pass rate. Unisa wishes to congratulate all candidates on their achievements.

The Acting Executive Dean of CAS, Mandisa Gandela, thanked all the lecturers who participated in the Unisa ITC Board Examination Technique Workshop in April 2021. "I would like to extend my gratitude to all the lecturers who participated in the workshop, which provided examination technique sessions to prepare candidates writing the ITC examination," she said. "Your commitment to serving the students is appreciated. The ITC results are a clear indication of Unisa’s contribution to transforming the CA profession in South Africa."
