Unisa honours extraordinary Unisans

At the Unisa official opening ceremony of the 2020 academic year, staff members were recognised for raising the university’s flag high through sheer hard work and dedication. The awards were presented by Chairperson of Council, Sakhi Simelane; Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Prof Mandla Makhanya; and Prof Veronica McKay, the Acting Vice-Principal of Teaching, Learning, Community Engagement and Student Support.

This presentation of awards comprised the Chairperson of Council Awards for Excellence and University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Certificates.


Chairperson of Council Awards for Excellence

The Chairperson of Council Awards for Excellence are granted to Unisans for excellent performance, accomplishments and achievements contributing to the university and its stakeholders. The nomination’s criteria are based on living the mission and vision of the university based on achievement of an NRF-A rating status by researchers, excellent overall job performance, excellent services to the community, distinguished leadership, integrity and impeccable character.

University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Certificates

In 2012, Unisa and UMUC signed an agreement to form a cooperation to honour Unisans with technology certificates in distance e-learning studying through both institutions. The recipients qualify for a Certificate in Technology in Distance Learning and e-Learning from UMUC, while simultaneously pursuing a Master's of Education in Open and Distance Learning (MEd in ODL) at Unisa. The first cohort of nominees received their certificates in 2014.

These certificates expose the students to authentic online educational experiences, best practices and in tracking current trends in open, distance and e-learning (ODeL). It is a full-time intensive online programme, rich in learning activities involving interactions with seminal works, pioneers and active researchers in open distance education.

This programme was introduced to respond to the growing challenges at Unisa to advance excellence, innovation and leadership in ODL teaching, learning and research. The programme contributes to Unisa increasingly been acknowledged in international and national contexts in broadening theorisation in ODL and informing ODL practice and policy development.
