In preparation for the job market, Unisa’s College of Human Sciences’ Department of Communication Science, in partnership with the Counselling and Career Development – a directorate which is based at the Sunnyside Campus – recently hosted a virtual career seminar for undergraduate students in the department.

The seminar offered tips on crafting a curriculum vitae (CV) and cover letter, searching for job opportunities, and preparing for interviews with confidence. Career Development Specialist Hazel Mandu Makhanya and Senior Student Counsellor Leza Deyzel, both from Unisa’s Directorate: Counselling and Career Development, mentioned that the session aims at giving them a solid foundation to navigate the job market and adapt to the changing world of work.

Speaking during the seminar, Amos Kova, the founder of the South African Professional Network Association (SAPNA), highlighted that it is important for Communication Science students to understand the future of work since technologies are taking over. In addition, His presentation clarified that technological advancements, while potentially displacing some jobs, also create new job opportunities in emerging industries and require employees to acquire new skills that lead to a dynamic and evolving job market. Communication Science students must therefore be able to develop in-demand skills while they are pursuing their studies. “It is important that you customise your CVs and also do research about the company you would like to work for and apply for their internships and jobs when they advertise”, he said. Furthermore, Kova reminded the students in attendance to be more confident when they go for job interviews.

Takalani Mudzanani, Professor in the Department of Communication Science, came up with the concept of the career seminar as part of the module he is coordinating. He explained that a seminar of this nature is crucial for all Communication Science students, especially those who are doing third-year modules.

The Chair of the Department of Communication Science, Professor Rofhiwa Mukhudwana, applauded the organising team for coming up with the co-curricular initiative for the benefit of the students. “As the COD, I commend the commitment shown by the Department and Directorate of Counselling and Career Development for putting students forward and helping them understand job market trends”, she added.

Ndivhuwo Sundani and Joseas Mphaga, lecturers in the Department of Communication Science who are also members of the organising team for the career seminar, urged students to register for and attend upcoming workshops organised by the department, to further hone their knowledge for what lies ahead in the labour market trends as they are ready to launch their careers towards a successful and fulfilling future.
