Driving Africa forward

Attending the conference were Dr Abdalla Alzubedi (High Commissioner: Libya), Prof. Mandla Makhanya (Principal and Vice-Chancellor: Unisa), Vincent Karega (High Commissioner: Rwanda), Kaselin Naidoo (BCX), and Dr Kelvin Kemm (Consultant: Stratek Business Strategy).

Tito Mboweni, former Governor of the Reserve Bank, delivered the keynote address at the first African Operations Management Conference organised by Unisa’s Department of Operations Management. He talked about optimising operations management in Africa through collaborative innovation for global competitiveness.

The theme of the conference that was held from 2 to 4 October 2017 at Muldersdrift was Competitive operations management for driving Africa forward. The conference comprised workshops, student colloquiums, industry visits, keynotes, panel sessions, special sessions, industry presentations, and academic presentations.

Tito Mboweni delivered the keynote address at the first African Operations Management Conference organised by Unisa’s Department of Operations Management.

According to Professor Mandla Makhanya, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Unisa, mutually beneficial partnerships and projects across the African continent will empower and develop communities through shared knowledge, improved levels of industrialisation, and economic diversification towards increased self-sufficiency and operations security.

The event was also used to launch the Society of Operations Management in Africa (SOMA). The non-profit organisation is a collaboration between industry, academia, and government.
