Call for nomination of members of the Unisa Council

The University of South Africa (Unisa) plays an important role nationally and makes a significant contribution to South Africa’s international standing and academic leadership. The University Council governs the University in terms of the Higher Education Act 101 of 1997(as amended) and the Statute of the University. Council has a fiduciary, governance and policy-making duty and is ultimately responsible for the determination of Unisa’s strategic direction.

Organizations, interest groups and individuals are hereby invited to nominate eligible candidates to serve on the Council of Unisa. There are currently seven (7) vacancies in the category of external members of Council with a broad spectrum of competencies. These
vacancies will be open in various periods from September 2023 until February 2024. The nominees should be persons who have skills and expertise in one or more of the following skills:

  • Accounting and / or Audit;
  • Finance and / or Investment;
  • Legal and Compliance
  • Risk Governance;
  • Information and Communication Technology;
  • Higher Education and Research;
  • Transformation, Social Justice and Policy; and
  • Governance

The appointments shall be for a period of four (4) years as required in the Institutional Statute, between 2023 and 2028, depending on the time of appointment. To be eligible for appointment the candidates must comply with the requirements of section 27(7) of the
Higher Education Act, including those relating to not having a conflict of interest with the University. Furthermore a candidate must not be an employee or student of the University, as contemplated in section 27(6) of the Higher Education Act. The candidate must also be
someone with demonstrable experience of not less than five (5) years as an active member of a governance board or a council and must not have previously been removed from an office of trust.

Nominations must be in writing and must be accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae of the nominee. The nominee must indicate their acceptance of the nomination in writing on the nomination form provided and must have the ability and time to serve on the Council and any committees of Council allocated to them.

Completed nomination forms must be emailed to the Office of the Deputy Registrar: Governance at the following email address: DepRegGovernance@unisa.ac.za, on or before 16:00 on Friday 05 May 2023 (Despite the closing date reflected on the call for nominations the call shall be open until 16:00 on Friday 12 May 2023).

Council shall appoint members from the ranks of the nominees who have been shortlisted by the Nominations and Governance Committee of Council (NGCoC). Successful candidates shall serve on the Council in their personal capacity and not as representatives of any interest group.
