I-SET

Lift off! We have a lift off!

Inspired towards Science, Engineering, and Technology (I-SET), a community engagement flagship project of the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology (CSET), was invited on 3 May 2019 to the DST Space Science Day at Delareyville, Atamelang, by the South Africa Agency of Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), on behalf of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), under the Space Science and Technology Chief Directorate, to raise awareness of space technology and the 4th industrial revolution (4IR).

The theme of the event was the role of space science and technology in the fourth industrial revolution. I-SET’s Kabelo Pheeha showcased a number of exciting LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robotics models that demonstrated the importance of automation and computation, as well as the importance of using robotics to teach and explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts.

The event attracted about 1 000 grade 9 to 12 learners as well as 18 regional and national exhibitors that displayed their exhibits and initiatives and engaged with the learners.

The event was joined by the DST's Chief Director of Space Science and Technology, Humbulani Mudau, as well as the Tswaing Municipality Mayor, Councillor Dimakatso Lydia Malwane, and North-West University’s Deputy Dean of Community Engagement and Stakeholder Relations, Professor Thebe Medupe.
