I-SET

Flowing into the STEMI conduit

Inspired towards Science, Engineering, and Technology (I-SET), a community engagement flagship project of the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology (CSET), was invited to the 18th Science Tube Festival in Thohoyandou at the Indoor Sport Centre, Vhembe District, Limpopo, from 13 to 17 May 2019.

The Science Tube Festival is an annual event, provincially recognised as a leading festival devoted to science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and innovation (STEMI). It attracts about 500 leading role-players in science, as well as researchers, and it is also supported by the Science Tube and friends, the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA), the Department of Science and Technology (DST), and partners.

According to SAASTA, the aim of Science Tube is to stimulate national interest, knowledge, and appreciation of science, engineering, technology and life-style (skills) through hands-on activities, theatre, comedy, motivational talks, talk-shops, and many more, with the aim of increasing successful student access and entry to the STEMI career pipeline, and to demonstrate the importance of scientific discovery and engineering prowess to solving humankind’s grand challenges.

Andzani Sibiya and Kabelo Pheeha of I-SET facilitated 30-minute workshops daily that demonstrated the importance of automation and computation. The learners built a ‘Riley Rover’ robot and then later programmed it to move forward, backwards, turn a corner, and also add sound. The learners wanted more but time was limited, so they left disappointedly.

On the last day, I-SET and other exhibitors from different science centres visited Azwifarwi Secondary School and Tshilala Secondary School in Thohoyandou to do presentations to grade 12 learners.

It is with great pleasure that we thank Kamusi Mutoti for the invitation and consideration. I-SET seeks to inspire an interest in science, engineering, and technology through fun by a nation of young people and their communities, and the mission was indeed accomplished.
