I-SET

Career expo and campus tour inspires

Inspired towards Science, Engineering, and Technology (I-SET), a community engagement flagship project of the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology (CSET), in conjunction with Unisa Career Counselling and Development, Science Campus, hosted 40 grade 10 to 12 learners from the Madiba Foundation in Limpopo, Sekhukhune, on 3 May 2019.

The Unisa Career Counselling and Development team hosted a career expo and campus tour for them, where I-SET, and the departments of Life Sciences and Mechanical Engineering were also part of inspiring the 40 learners’ interest in science, engineering, and technology through fun activities.

I-SET’s Andzani Sibiya facilitated the robotics workshop by allowing them to build and programme a Riley Rover Robot in an hour. The learners showed a lot of interest and Katleho Ntsutle and Busisiwe Tsoute were the highlight of the day. They built and programmed their own robot within 25 minutes and thereafter assisted the other three groups. This was captivating to watch and, as I-SET, we were the ones inspired.

Some of the comments from the learners as noted on the visitor’s book were as follows: “At first it was hard, but at the end I found out that nothing is impossible.” “It was fun to be here and I wish to come back.” At the end of the workshop, the learners were awarded with a ‘certificate of completion’ as a way of thanking them for attending.

I-SET would like to thank Gloria Adisa from the Career Counselling and Development team, Science Campus, for the invitation to host such an enthusiastic group of learners.
