Given joined Unisa as a Postgraduate Research Assistant (GYOT) in 2016. Given was active in operate GIS software technology in the community safety networks project. His responsibilities included Geocode and analysed 3000 crime hotspots in the use of GIS software technology and later on He was appointed as a permanent lecturer in the UNISA (College of Law: School of Criminal Justice: Department of Police Practice). In 2021, Given won an award for transformation in teaching and learning at the college level.
