Once upon a [digital] time…

The Department of Communication Science in Unisa’s College of Human Sciences recently held a second lecture as part of their Community of Communication Scholarship Project. They hosted Dr Damien Tomaselli, from the Department of Communication at the University of Johannesburg, who spoke on innovating story form in the wake of emerging technologies.

According to Tomaselli, storytelling is arguably one of the oldest forms of communication. Through stories, we come to understandings that are hard won or impossible through other means. We not only understand more, but we retain more. In the digital epoch, we have the opportunity to share and hear more stories than ever before, and that is why it is important to discuss innovation in this regard.

The Community of Communication Scholarship Project was undertaken by the department based on the fact that a university education comprises much more than just discipline learning or knowledge. Through interactions and discussions on academic topics, scholarly muscles of academics are exercised, and academic maturity is built, allowing scholars and students to construct their own thoughts, theories and epistemologies.

Given that Unisa students are all around the globe, a space for virtual interaction - a virtual community of scholarship - was constructed for this important feature of postgraduate life. Sessions are held every month and invitations for specific events will also be advertised.
