CHS mentorship initiative in its twelfth year

The College of Human Sciences (CHS) launched its 12th Mentorship Programme on 21 April 2022. The programme was established in 2009 with the aim of assisting newly appointed academics to improve their standing, while inculcating a culture of hard work, accountability and productivity. The programme was started in the college with the support of the Human Resources Development office.

Welcoming the mentors and mentees at the launch ceremony was Prof Kgomotso Masemola, CHS Executive Dean. Masemola explained that the Mentorship Programme is a flagship programme in the college which the executive management fully supports. He applauded the Deputy Dean of CHS, Prof Zethu Nkosi, and the team for continuously ensuring that the programme runs successfully and also for supporting both the mentees and mentors in the past years.

During the launch, Prof Fortunate Silinda, Chair of the Department of Psychology, was given a platform to share her experience with this programme. Silinda said: "I am grateful for the opportunity given by the college to participate in this programme, from being a mentee myself and growing in my professional space, to finally being a mentor."

Elaborating on her experiences, Silinda mentioned that the programme presented a crucial learning curve for her, which she found rewarding and stimulating. She encouraged the mentees to never doubt their potential and what they can offer to their mentors. "This programme is a two-way street – as a mentee you also are a teacher to your mentor," she said. "Don’t underestimate yourself."

In his closing remarks, Masemola attributed the achievements and ratings in the college to the Mentorship Programme. "Our success rate in the college is 98,5%; in comparison with other colleges, we are doing extremely well," he said. He further told the mentees that they should bear in mind that this is a contract between them and their mentors and that it is important to commit to the programme for them to achieve fruitful results at the end thereof. Masemola concluded by sharing the college’s motto with the audience: "We lead others as we lead."
