National Department of Public Works & Infrastructure in collaboration with UNISA – (College of Education), Engaged Scholarship: Tateni Breaking the Cycle of Poverty under the auspices of Professor R Tabane- School Director – CEDU – Educational Studies  which is one of the key partners of the Department of Public Works’ professional services branch together  with his team from Psychology of Education and Science and Technology departments held an Annual Awards Ceremony on the 26 January 2023, at Protea hotel fire & ice, Pretoria Menlyn. Tateni ES provides professional development to teachers to enhance teaching and learning and psychological support, career choices/guidance to learners in identified schools across the nine provinces.

A total number of 77 matric learners were the recipients of these bursaries, each worth R165 000 per annum to cater for the needs of their studies at different universities across the country in 2023 academic year.

A moving reply made by one of the learners from deep rural of KZN, Ulundi, Ms. Aphiwe Ngwane from Zwelonke Secondary on how she made it through in matric. MEC Patricia DeLille- was in attendance and delivered a keynote address. In her speech, she committed herself that in 2024, more bursaries will be awarded, and a big chunk will go to a girl child. She further highlighted that these professions (Engineering, Construction and Design) are male dominated, and that narrative and stereotype need to change.  Lastly to attract more females in these male dominated fields of study.
