This SLP is aimed at students in Africa and beyond who are interested in continent-wide security issues and how to manage it. Potential students who can benefit from the program are:

Civil servants and politicians who are preparing for a career in public service, include governance policy-making, diplomacy, socio-economic development, trade and industry, security forces, technological advancement, and ecological management.
Security practitioners and analysts in the public and private security industry.
Leaders in business, civil society, NGO's and communities working in Africa who seek to advance their knowledge of security management.
Admission requirements:
Any qualification in security management on level 7 OR
At least three years of management experience in a security organisation

Purpose statement:
The advanced course seeks to offer prospects for research and innovative thinking in the fields of security management on the African continent. A successful student will understand the risks and threats against the aspirations of Agenda 2063 of the African Union and the security of all people living in Africa.
The module Assessing Security Threats on The African Continent is aimed at providing the student with knowledge and skills to assess security threats to developmental programs in Africa on regional, sub-regional and mission level.
The module Managing Security Risks for Public and International Affairs aims to impart specialised skills to identify, respond to and manage risks related to security challenges in Africa and globally.
The module Public Violence Prevention aims to impart specialised skills and knowledge to prevent violence in communities as specific security challenge of African societies.

Contemporary human security threats in selected African countries
Assess security threats to programmes of the African Union and Regional Economic Communities.
Assess security threats in a defined operational area of peace and diplomatic missions in Africa.

Content:
The principles of risk management applicable to government affairs in Africa.
Contemporary security risks for South African diplomacy in other countries on the African continent.
Cyber security risks for African countries in a global context.
Security risk mitigation for public service institutions in Africa.
ADSM30C - Public Violence Prevention
Content:
The causes, dynamics and consequences of violence in African society.
Collaborative violence prevention in African communities.
Social cohesion and conciliation as preconditions for violence prevention.
