The inaugural meeting of South African public university council chairpersons, convened by Dr Dan Mosia, Unisa Council Chairperson, at the Unisa Council Chambers on 08 November 2025, focused on establishing a national forum dedicated to strengthening governance practices, enhancing oversight, fostering legislative engagement, and establishing a structured platform for sharing expertise across institutions.

The motivation for the forum stems from the growing complexity of the higher education environment, which is shaped by rapid changes in science, technology, economics, and geopolitics. Chairpersons emphasised the importance of coordinated responses, shared learning, and consistent governance standards.

The meeting produced three initial workstreams to refine proposed focus areas, with progress reports expected early next year. The launch of the forum will be finalised at a subsequent gathering. Fifteen councils were represented, with several others sending apologies and messages of support. Input from the President of the TVET Forum, who shared lessons from the forum, underscored the value of collaboration.

Mosia chaired the session, guiding discussions and consensus-building throughout this significant first step toward a unified Council Chairpersons Forum.
