Unisa’s Gauteng Region, in collaboration with the Recognition of Prior Learning Division, hosted an insightful information session on recognition of prior learning (RPL) at the Krugersdorp Library in Mogale City on 8 October 2025.

The purpose of the session was to share essential information on RPL processes with Mogale City staff members who are keen to further their studies and advance their careers through Unisa’s RPL opportunities. This event formed part of the ongoing partnership between Unisa and Mogale City, which was established in 2016 and is continuously strengthened through various collaborative initiatives aimed at staff and community development.

The session was well attended, drawing about 60 participants, including staff members from the Mogale City Library, the Gauteng Region Library and Unisa’s RPL Division. Presentations were delivered by Victor Mbuqe, Dr Hadji Mutambuli, George Leute and Hugene Nkhwashu, who provided detailed insights into different aspects of the RPL process.

Mbuqe reflected on the long-standing partnership with Mogale City, noting that it will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2026. Mutambuli gave an overview of RPL opportunities and encouraged further collaboration, particularly in work-integrated learning (WIL) placements. Leute elaborated on RPL for undergraduate and postgraduate diploma applicants, outlining access routes, requirements and success stories. Nkhwashu discussed RPL processes for master’s and doctoral qualifications, explaining how RPL can assist applicants who may not meet standard admission requirements.

The session was highly interactive, with participants actively engaging during the question-and-answer segment. Presenters addressed most queries, while a few were earmarked for further investigation. The lively participation reflected a strong interest in RPL as a pathway to academic and professional growth. The event concluded with a renewed commitment to continued collaboration and to future initiatives aimed at empowering communities through education.

The RPL information session in Mogale City served as a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and partnership building. It reinforced Unisa’s commitment to widening access to education through RPL and empowering individuals to transform their work experience into recognised academic achievement.

The enthusiasm and engagement of attendees underscored the importance of sustained collaboration between Unisa and Mogale City in promoting lifelong learning and development. Looking ahead, both institutions aim to expand these initiatives to reach more employees and community members, ensuring that education remains an accessible and transformative tool for all.
