The Archives team is dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of Unisa
Two Unisa departments – the Alumni Relations Office and the Unisa Library Archives – have embarked on a collaboration to underscore a shared commitment to honouring the past and building the future of our university family.
The Alumni Relations Office is the custodian of the Unisa alumni database, a living record of more than one million graduates who earned their place in Unisa’s history and carry the university’s legacy into the world. Each name in the database represents a significant contribution to society and a notable academic achievement. Similarly, the Archives preserve the university’s repository of archival manuscripts, records, documents and photographs that narrate the legacy of Unisa’s journey spanning over 150 years.
The Unisa Library Archives are situated on the Muckleneuk Campus
As the two departments bring these two roles together, it creates a synergy: the living memory of our graduates aligned with the preserved history of our institution. Together, they can sustain the legacy of Unisa and its people. The long-term goal is to enable future generations to draw inspiration from the rich historical record of the university and its alumni's achievements.
Prof Mpho Ngoepe, Executive Director of Unisa Library Services, welcomed the development. "The collaboration between the Alumni Relations and the Archives secures the continuous enrichment and preservation of Unisa’s heritage by the experiences and stories of our graduates," he said. "It solidifies our ability to tell the complete story of Unisa."
Amanda Tlale, Manager of the Alumni Relations Office, will lead this initiative on their side. She affirmed her team’s commitment, saying: "Our office is excited to work with the Library’s Archival Services. We aim to align our efforts to preserve the history of our graduates by supporting the Archives in their important role of protecting Unisa’s institutional memory."
This collaboration marks the start of a new chapter in how Unisa honours its past while engaging with its present community. Over the coming weeks, we will share more information on how staff members can get involved to ensure that the voices of Unisa’s graduates and staff are heard.
