Unisa once again demonstrated its leadership and innovation at the 2025 Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) Annual Conference, held in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, from 30 September to 3 October 2025.

Under the theme "Libraries Transforming Communities Through Innovation and Access", the conference brought together library and information professionals, academics and scholars from across the country to exchange ideas and showcase cutting-edge research shaping the future of the profession.

Three Unisa scholars proudly represented the university by receiving top awards for their outstanding contributions.

Lesiba Simon Mojapelo, a lecturer in the Department of Information Science, was named the Oral and Research-Based Presentation Winner for his paper titled "Empowering Entrepreneurs: The Transformative Role of Community Libraries in Economic Development and Innovation". His research highlighted how community libraries can serve as powerful platforms for creativity, innovation and social empowerment.

"Winning this award is an affirmation that libraries are not just book spaces; they are catalysts for economic growth and community transformation," said Mojapelo.

Dr Ntombizonke Sizeni Makhathini, Acting Manager: Research Planning and Quality, and Dr Lesiba Ledwaba, Acting Director: Library Systems and Support Services, jointly won the Best Poster Award for their research titled "Understanding the Changing Needs, Expectations, and Experiences of CODeL Library Users through Pulse Survey". Their study underscored the importance of data-driven feedback in improving library services for open, distance and e-Learning (ODeL) students.

"Our students’ voices shape how we serve them. This research helps ensure our libraries remain responsive and student-centred," noted Makhathini.

These awards reaffirm Unisa’s commitment to research excellence, innovation, and the transformative role of libraries in advancing education and community development.

Adding to Unisa’s proud representation, Dr Rachel Matlala Mahlatji, a lecturer in the Department of Information Science, was among the esteemed nominees for Librarian of the Year. Her nomination is a testament to her dedication to advancing library and information services, scholarly excellence, and mentorship within the academic community.

"Being nominated among such accomplished professionals is an honour that reflects our shared commitment to the growth and visibility of the LIS profession," said Mahlatji.

Her recognition highlights the calibre of leadership and talent that Unisa continues to nurture within the field.

The university’s strong presence at LIASA 2025 was made possible through the continued encouragement and mentorship of Prof Mpho Ngoepe, Acting Vice-Principal: Research, Postgraduate Studies, Innovation and Commercialisation. His commitment to nurturing researcher development has inspired many Unisa staff members to share their scholarly work and make meaningful contributions to the library and information science landscape.

Unisa delegates from Library and Information Services, the Department of Information Science, and the Department of Psychology presented diverse research projects exploring digital transformation, inclusive library practices, open-source technologies, community empowerment and archival preservation – all reflecting Unisa’s vision of innovation with social impact.

Providing strategic direction at the conference was Dr Janice De Wee, Acting Executive Director of Unisa Library and Information Services. A respected scholar and thought leader, De Wee presented a paper titled "Infusing Localised Academic Library Standards into Quality Processes: A Case of a CODeL Academic Library". Her work received high praise for aligning library quality frameworks with institutional excellence.

"Quality and innovation go hand in hand. At Unisa Library, we continue to align our standards with the changing needs of our academic community," said De Wee.

Under her leadership, the Unisa Library continues to advance as a forward-thinking, inclusive and technology-driven information hub, integrating knowledge, innovation and community engagement in the digital era.

In his closing address, LIASA President, Mr Charlie Molepo, applauded library professionals for their dedication to expanding access, fostering innovation and driving leadership in the field.

Unisa’s remarkable achievements at LIASA 2025 reaffirm its standing as a national leader in library innovation, research and transformation – proudly flying the Unisa flag high while shaping the future of information services in South Africa.

Congratulations to all Unisa presenters, award winners and nominees for their outstanding contributions to the profession and for exemplifying excellence, innovation and impact.
