After an agreement between Unisa and the Board of the South African Institute for Library and Information Science (SAILIS) in 1988, the Unisa Library became the official depository for the SAILIS documents. The Archives consist of the documents of the old South African Library Association (SALA) and the South African Institute for Library and Information Science (SAILIS).

The SAILIS Archives offer an overview of the development of librarianship as a profession and the development and activities of library associations in South Africa since 1930.
These may only be consulted in the Archives.
