Prepare for study success

Commit to your studies

Whether you are a new student or a returning student, you need to take some time to think about how you will commit to the study process and what you need to put in place to focus on your studies.

Take some time to think about these questions:

  • Where are you now in terms of your career, studies or personal circumstances?
  • What do you want? What would you like to achieve by completing your qualification?
  • What do you have to do to get there?
  • Do you think you can complete your qualification? Remember, the biggest commitment you must make is the commitment to yourself.
  • What do you already have in place that could help you to succeed with your studies?
  • What do you need to put in place to help you succeed with your studies?

Activity

Write down a personal success statement where you commit to completing your academic year successfully. For example:

"It does not matter what happens and how I feel, I will get through this year because... (complete the sentence)."

Plan your studies

Reflect on your study plan: which qualification(s) do you plan on completing (eg BA, BA honours, master’s degree)

  • Take time to understand the curriculum for your qualification.
  • What are my major subjects?
  • What is the minimum and maximum duration for my qualification?
  • How many credits do I need to pass each year?
  • Consider the modules needed to complete the qualification and their pre and co-requisites.

Compile a document where you plan your modules over the number of years you wish to complete your qualification. Understand the admission requirements for your next qualification.

  • Is there a certain average I need to obtain at undergraduate level to be able to continue with the next qualification?
