Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

For laptops

Windows:

• Press Win + L on your keyboard to lock your screen instantly.
• Alternatively, you can click on the Start Menu, select your user icon and choose lock.

Mac:

• Press Control + Command + Q to lock your screen.
• You can also go to the Apple menu and select Lock Screen.

For desktop domputers

Windows:

• Use the same shortcut: Win + L.
• You can also right-click on the desktop, go to New > Shortcut, and create a shortcut to lock your screen.

Mac:

• Again, use Control + Command + Q to lock your screen.
• Or click on the Apple menu and choose Lock Screen.

Why is auto-locking important

• Security: Auto-locking your device safeguards sensitive information by preventing unauthorised access when you step away from your device.
• Privacy: It ensures that your personal and work-related data remains confidential, even in shared spaces.
• Data protection: In case of theft or loss, auto-locking can help prevent data breaches.
• Professionalism: Locking your device when not in use reflects a commitment to security and professionalism, particularly in collaborative environments.

Take these urgent steps if you think you've been compromised:

1. Change your passwords immediately.
2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) if you haven’t already. 
3. Report the incident to Unisa. 
4. Run a virus/malware scan.

The following signs may indicated that your device is infected with malware:

• Slow performance
• Frequent crashes
• Unusual pop-ups or browser redirects
• Programs opening/closing on their own

Cybersecurity isn’t just about hiding things - it’s about protecting your privacy, identity and future.

Even minor breaches can lead to financial loss or academic consequences.
