Attendees and presenters at a Student Mentor Programme session in East London
The student mentor programme is a volunteer programme aimed at preparing final-year students to become the champions of graduateness and success at Unisa. It is to prepare leadership, strengthen graduate attributes and promote academic and career success.
Led by Nolwazi Somtsewu (student counsellor and psychologist), most of the training and supervision in the university’s Eastern Cape Region takes place online, making it easier for Unisa students.
Here is what the current student mentors had to say about their experiences.
Personal and professional growth
- "Reflecting on my journey thus far, I can proudly say I have become a better version of myself. This year, I took a leap of faith and got the post of student mentor, which has taught me not to assume things."
- "I have learned to work under pressure, explore my strengths and discover qualities within myself that will be valuable in my future."
- "This opportunity has helped boost my self-confidence as I started creating developmental content, conducting workshops, and mentoring students."
- "Being a student mentor at Unisa has been an amazing journey for me. This experience enhances my personal growth and gives me a sense of purpose."
- "Looking back, mentoring has shaped how I engage with others and how I see myself. I am excited to apply the skills I have developed through this programme in future roles, and I truly appreciate the experience and knowledge I gained."
Skills development
- "As a law student, this mentorship experience has helped me develop communication and listening skills. I now listen with empathy and understanding. My leadership skills have strengthened by helping and supporting my mentees."
- "Through the student mentorship programme, I developed conscientiousness by learning the art of discipline and practising reliability as an essential skill in a world where standing out matters."
- "I understand the importance of communication and performing under pressure, skills that will serve me as an accountant."
- "Mentoring is strengthening my leadership and communication skills while also building valuable experience that will benefit my future teaching career."
- "Through raising awareness about the dangers of Nyaope drug use, I developed strong research and presentation skills."
Workshops and activities
- "The techniques shared in our workshops for time management have helped me balance my academic responsibilities with mentoring duties, learning how to prioritise tasks and setting realistic goals."
- "I have never imagined myself in a virtual meeting, but I got to experience that now. I can share a screen on Teams."
- "One of the most impactful experiences I had as a student mentor was participating in a community outreach and employment preparation workshop. It was more than just a learning space; it was a platform for empowerment, connection and real-world readiness."
Meaningful impact
- "I am grateful for this opportunity that was granted to me. I used to believe that without connections, I would not get opportunities. I have learned to interact with different people, work in a professional space and explain ideas clearly. As Socrates said, ‘The way to gain a good reputation is to endeavour to be what you desire to appear. ’"
- "My biggest desire in life is to work so hard that those I look up to today will one day look up to me for my strides and efforts it took to build my brand and impact the world meaningfully."
- "Being busy has become a buzzword, but it might be the very thing standing between us and our goals. Our talents are already within us; we just need the right platform."
- "I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to positively impact students' lives, both academically and personally, by providing support and guidance that helps them achieve their goals."
A student mentor shared how Gantsa's support helped them overcome a challenge during exams.
"I couldn't access my webcam during my first exam paper and believed I would not write that day. However, Miss Gantsa assisted me regardless of the time and distance, and I could complete my exam successfully. I am grateful for her support."
Making an impact in the community
Student mentors have supported the Unisa counselling unit through marketing services, sharing resources, and participating in workshops. Their online one-on-one mentoring sessions with new students have focused on orientation and adjustment to Unisa, study tips, time management and exam preparation skills.
Mentors also engaged in diversity and human rights training focusing on disability, LGBTGIA+ and HIV and Aids. They learned about fighting stigma, raising awareness through advocacy, empowerment and positive coping strategies to enhance resilience.
In addition, mentors served as programme directors for Anchored in Prayer for exam success, adding spiritual encouragement with academic motivation. They presented their study journeys from higher certificates to degrees and their study strategies and personal experiences that helped them overcome challenges and stay motivated throughout their academic paths. This motivated those starting their academic journey with Unisa at a higher certificate level.
The student mentor programme is more than just a volunteer opportunity; it is a journey of growth, purpose and meaningful impact. As the reflections show, mentorship supports others and transforms the mentor.
