In 2022, Unisa extended a call to its alumni community, particularly those who had completed master’s and doctoral qualifications, to contribute to the university’s academic project by serving as supervisors for master’s and doctoral (M&D) students. This call was rooted in a strategic effort to enhance postgraduate throughput and strengthen the institution’s research capacity.
The response from alumni has been both encouraging and impactful. Since the call was issued, 185 Unisa alumni have been appointed as M&D supervisors, demonstrating a strong commitment to giving back to their alma mater. These individuals, who once walked the journey of postgraduate study themselves, are now playing a critical role in guiding the next generation of scholars.
To support this initiative, the College of Graduate Studies offered a supervisory training programme to equip both alumni and external stakeholders with the knowledge and skills required to guide M&D candidates effectively. This programme provides practical and academic guidance on the supervision process, ensuring that prospective supervisors are well prepared for their roles. Upon completion of the training, candidates are encouraged to engage with the relevant colleges within the university to determine alignment between their areas of expertise and the colleges’ research focus areas, thereby strengthening the quality and relevance of postgraduate supervision across disciplines.
Amanda Tlale, Manager of the Alumni Relations Office, notes that by stepping into supervisory roles, alumni share their expertise and experience, contributing to the university's intellectual growth and sustainability. “Their involvement strengthens the academic pipeline, supports student success and reinforces the university’s position as a leading open distance learning institution,” she says.
This initiative also reflects the enduring relationship between Unisa and its alumni. It highlights how alumni engagement can extend beyond networking and events, evolving into meaningful academic partnerships that directly impact institutional goals. In supporting postgraduate students, these alumni supervisors are helping to shape future researchers, academics and leaders across various disciplines.
As Unisa continues to prioritise research excellence and increased postgraduate throughput, the contribution of its alumni remains invaluable. Their willingness to serve not only reflects loyalty to the institution but also a shared vision of advancing knowledge in the service of society.
