Tourists for science
The College of Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) and the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science (CAES) hosted the 2017 National Science Week from 8 August 2017 until 12 August 2017, at the Science Campus in Florida, Roodepoort.
This project was made possible by I-SET (Inspired Towards Science Engineering and Technology), a community engagement flagship project of CSET, who was one of the National Science Week grant holders from the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).
The first, third, and fourth days were dedicated to school learners and their educators while the remaining days were reserved for the general public.
The NSW was themed Science tourism. Learners were the science tourists! The departments within the campus demonstrated different fun science-engaging activities to inspire learners to consider science, engineering, or technology courses as a future career. Learners took a tour to the I-SET Robotics Hub, Zoology Centre, Micro Biology, 3D Scanning, Chemistry Labs, Mobile Veterinary Clinic, Horticulture Centre, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, Drones, Engineering Labs, and had an hour of coding at the School of Computing. The learners also learnt from various departments that were stationed at the exhibition hall, such as the Maths Edge, Statistics, Geography, CSET, Cyber Security and Nanotechnology and Water Sustainability Research Unit.
