Postgraduate student capacity-building interventions

Moipone Masalesa, Regional Director of the Gauteng Region

The College of Graduate Studies (CGS) recently held its third regional roadshow on the Muckleneuk Campus. The roadshow aimed to connect with master’s and doctoral  (M&D) students to ensure their challenges were addressed. The event also aimed to share information about additional support and introduce students to the multiple initiatives CGS offers in service of postgraduate excellence. The roadshows are designed to focus on postgraduate students and to acknowledge that they are prioritised by the college, whose mandate is to serve them.

The Regional Director of the Gauteng Region, Moipone Masalesa, and the Vice-Principal of Research, Postgraduate Studies, Innovation & Commercialisation, Prof Thenjiwe Meyiwa, made some welcoming and opening remarks. At the same time, Prof Tennyson Mgutshini, the Acting Executive Dean of the College of Graduate Studies, facilitated the programme.

Unisa is a leading open-distance e-learning (ODeL) institution. The roadshow clarified that it is necessary to accelerate the postgraduate academic project so that the university can achieve its expected outcomes. Particular emphasis was placed on collaboration between students and supervisors. Meyiwa highlighted the importance of the roadshow from a governmental and economic perspective.

Mgutshini presented an Online Accelerated Postgraduate Support Programme to ensure excellent outcomes for the M&D students at Unisa. In addition to this programme, the college has numerous research support workshops to assist students during their postgraduate journey.
