“I Wanted to give up, but the bursary came through for me and it played a critical role in helping me pursue my studies. I am truly thankful for this unexpected and life-changing gesture,” says Phumudzo Musitha, a Unisa student currently pursuing her degree in Industrial and Organisational Psychology.

Musitha’s higher education journey began in 2015 at a private college, but financial difficulties prevented her from completing her studies.
Musitha explains that she first learnt about Unisa through her mother’s friend, whose daughter was studying at Unisa. “She spoke highly of the wide selection of course offerings and affordable tuition fees, which sparked my curiosity and interest in the institution.” Thereafter, Phumudzo decided to apply.
Musitha successfully completed a higher certificate in supervisory management in the first semester of 2024, after which, she enrolled for a Bachelor of Commerce in Industrial and organisational psychology in the second semester of that year, she explains: “The vast information I encountered, much of which I had never been exposed to, sparked a deep interest and curiosity in me. This newly found passion led me to pursue a course in Industrial and Organisational Psychology because I wanted to explore more and truly understand the field.”
Determination turns obstacles into milestones
Musitha successfully applied for and obtained funding through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. However, this did not cover her fees in full, and the outstanding balance became an overwhelming burden.
Generous support from the Motsepe Foundation.
A bursary from the Motsepe Foundation means that she does not have to put her studies on hold to save up to pay her outstanding fees and cover the balance of her tuition fees.
Expressing her appreciation, Musitha adds: “This bursary came through for me at a difficult time – it is truly a blessing, and from now, I can continue focusing on my studies toward obtaining my degree.”
