Mantsane’s success testimony to Unisa Radio’s superb training

Fondly remembered as one of the very best volunteers trained by Unisa Radio, Mantsane Mofokeng, now at Radio 702, keeps on inspiring young people to follow their dreams.

Originally from the Free State, Mantsane began her radio career when she saw an opportunity to become part of Unisa Radio, and went for it. After becoming part of the team in 2012, she was initially a newsreader and moved up to producing after two years.

In 2015, Mantsane left Unisa Radio to work as a producer for Radio 702. Interviewed by Pascaline Molepo, Mantsane explained that though she still found herself having to learn new things as a producer, Unisa Radio has given her almost every skill she requires. “I love Unisa Radio. I will always love Unisa Radio”, she said.

She went on to say that she would not be where she is today if it was not for the support she got from her colleagues at Unisa Radio. “I really got a lot of support from Unisa Radio as a whole,” she said. “It was a great experience being a volunteer at the campus radio station.” She said that she was grateful to a number of people who pushed her to do better and be better. “Kgaugelo Pule was the head of news at the time,” said Mantsane. “She was very supportive. I was very shy and could not read news properly but she was always there for me and always told me I’ll make it.”

“The then deputy station manager, Tali, was also supportive and I had Nancy K who mentored me,” she said. Asked to give some words of encouragement to students who would like to pursue careers as media people, Mantsane explained that it is all about passion and following your dreams, “ It’s very important to follow your heart,” she concluded. “If you are into radio, do not be into it because of somebody else… don’t be into media because of somebody else. Do it because you want to do it.”

Mantsane now resides in Midrand and hopes to take her career to the next level.
