On 9 May 2025, the Counselling and Career Development Unit of Unisa, led by Dr Bunki Pitsoane, hosted a dynamic and successful career fair at Seabe High School, This initiative aimed to provide learners and unemployed youth from the surrounding areas with an opportunity to explore various career paths and connect directly with institutions of higher learning, organisations and SETAs.

Now in its third year, the career fair forms part of Unisa’s ongoing community outreach programme and continues to grow in reach and impact. The 2025 fair brought together learners from eight different schools, as well as young job seekers from Seabe, Nokaneng and Marapyane.

The purpose of the event was to empower youth through career guidance, exposing them to real-world opportunities and helping them to make informed decisions about their academic and professional future. Through direct engagement with exhibitors, attendees could network, ask questions and receive information on study options, funding and potential career paths.

Pitsoane and her team created a warm and inspiring atmosphere, and learners were encouraged to dream big and pursue their goals. The energy and enthusiasm among the learners demonstrated a strong hunger for knowledge and success, reinforcing the importance of such initiatives in rural communities. The career fair promoted career awareness and helped to equip the youth with information on the many possibilities that will open up to them after matric.

This career fair is more than an event, it is a bridge of hope. Representatives from Unisa are grateful to continue empowering young people year after year and bringing meaningful opportunities closer to home for them. Pitsoane said that their unit is guided by the quote “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give”, hence a need to always share career information with less advantaged schools for the betterment of their lives through relevant career paths.

Despite limited resources, the commitment from Unisa and partner organisations ensured that the event was a success, making a tangible difference in the lives of the participants.
