Update on the investigation into complaints of sexual and online harassment levelled against members of the National Student Representative Council (NSRC)

The University of South Africa (Unisa) issued a statement on Monday, 12 July 2021 confirming its receipt and investigation of reported complaints of sexual and online harassment made against members of the National Student Representative Council (NSRC).

As soon as the complaints were laid, the university instituted formal investigative and disciplinary processes in line with applicable university policy.

The university wishes to update all stakeholders that, in the interim, the NSRC member against whom the complaint of sexual harassment has been made has written to the university and advised that he is recusing himself from the NSRC until the matter has been finalised. This withdrawal is with immediate effect.

The university has accepted his request and accordingly directed the Dean of Students to assist with the formal facilitation of this withdrawal and to advise all relevant stakeholders of these developments, including the NSRC and RSRC structures.

The process of investigating the sexual harassment complaint and the complaint of online harassment is at an advanced stage and the university remains committed to finalising these matters speedily and without fear, favour or prejudice.
