Cognisant of the President's call to find solutions and in taking a stand against gender-based violence, the University of South Africa (Unisa) has embarked on a national self-defence initiative for its female students.

One of the many planned interventions will be the handing out of pepper sprays to Unisa female students for their safety and protection. The initiative, made possible partially through generous donations by Unisa's extended management, was initiated today, 4 October 2019, with a ceremony hosted by Prof Mandla Makhanya, Unisa Principal and Vice-Chancellor, at the Unisa Sunnyside Campus.

Unisa condemns all forms of gender-based violence and supports any efforts to curb the scourge.
