NOTICE TO ALL ENGINEERING STUDENTS
Dear Students
This notice seeks to provide clarity to all registered and prospective engineering students on the new engineering qualification on offer at the University of South Africa, College of Science, Engineering and Technology, School of Engineering. The Higher Education Qualifications Framework (HEQF), which was promulgated in October 2007 (Government Gazette No 30353 of 5 October 2007), provided for the establishment of a single qualifications framework for higher education to facilitate the development of a single national coordinated higher education system. The revised HEQSF was promulgated in August 2013 as approved by the Minister of Higher Education and Training (Notice 1040 of 2012; Government Gazette No. 36003 of 14 December 2012) in terms of the National Qualifications Act, 2008 (Act No. 67 0f 2008) and as contemplated in the Higher Education Act, 1997 (Act No. 101 of 1997).
It is vital to emphasise that even though these qualifications are also on NQF level 6, their outcomes are different and, as such, they are assessed differently. It is for this reason that students are advised not to move from the national diploma to the new diploma. However, it remains the prerogative of the student to decide whether to convert or not. Those who choose to convert to the new diploma, further note that only modules shown in tables 3 to 8 will be credited towards the new Diploma: Engineering.

This notice seeks to provide clarity to all registered and prospective engineering students on the new engineering qualifications on offer at the University of South Africa, College of Science, Engineering and Technology, School of Engineering. To ensure compliance with the regulatory framework, Unisa has recently introduced new engineering qualifications. The Baccalaureus Technologiae: Engineering (BTECH) qualifications were all replaced by the Advanced Diploma: Engineering. In this regard, kindly note that you have until 2021 to complete your Baccalaureus Technologiae: Engineering programme. Also note that should you wish to convert from the Baccalaureus Technologiae: Engineering to the Advanced Diploma: Engineering, no credits will be carried over. Students who do not complete their Baccalaureus Technologiae: Engineering qualifications at the end of 2021 will automatically be moved to a new relevant Advanced Diploma: Engineering. The implication of this decision is that students who do not complete their Baccalaureus Technologiae: Engineering qualifications, will forfeit all credits. The affected qualifications are shown in tables 9 and 10.
