The National Student Representative Council (NSRC) of the University of South Africa (UNISA) is pleased to announce a major step forward in our ongoing fight to protect students from financial exclusion. After intensive engagements with the University’s management, NSFAS, and other relevant stakeholders, we have successfully secured resources to assist more than 7,000 students who were previously at risk of being unable to register due to funding challenges.
This breakthrough comes in response to the serious impact of NSFAS funding delays, restrictive policy changes, and administrative exclusions which have left thousands in uncertainty. The NSRC, upon receiving the list of affected students, immediately mobilized and engaged in urgent discussions to secure an intervention. As a result, the University has allocated financial assistance to ensure that qualifying students — particularly final-year students, those nearing completion, and those at risk of dropping out — have a clear pathway to registration.
While this allocation does not yet mean that all affected students are registered, it provides a lifeline for thousands to finalize their enrolment once the process is fully implemented. This is a victory for collective student activism and demonstrates that when we are united and decisive, we can overcome barriers to education.
The NSRC remains committed to pushing for a permanent resolution to the systemic challenges facing students, including NSFAS’s policy misalignments and administrative inefficiencies. We will continue to work tirelessly until every student can access and complete their studies without financial or bureaucratic obstruction.
The SRC will continue to engaging on students behalf to find solution for students studying t Unisa
