Microsoft is retiring Microsoft-provided SMS and voice authentication for multi-factor authentication (MFA) and self-service password resets on 1 February 2027. This change is being implemented to improve security and protect against modern phishing attacks.
We request that all staff and students complete their passkey registration as early as possible rather than waiting until the enforcement date. Early registration will help minimise authentication-related difficulties.
Please click here to register your passkey, and also refer to the accompanying guide on how to register and use a passkey.
A passkey is a phishing-resistant credential that provides passwordless primary authentication and satisfies MFA requirements through possession combined with a device PIN or biometric verification. Passwords may remain enabled as a fallback authentication method. Passkeys are designed to protect against remote phishing, credential replay, and SIM-swap attacks.
If you experience any issues with your authentication method, contact the Unisa support team on 0800 00 1870 or email enquire@unisa.ac.za.
