The College of Graduate Studies is offering a tailor-made “Postgraduate Academic Writing Programme”. At the CGS, we are committed to postgraduate pedagogical excellence, and we strive to respond to the support needs of our students. This course was developed to assist our postgraduate students with the academic writing competencies that are needed to excel in their research journeys.
Students will benefit optimally from the course if they attend all sessions.
This programme consists of 12 sessions, divided into 3 blocks. Below we list the topics for each session. These sessions are open to all registered master's and doctoral students.
Session 1: Introduction to the course; Critical thinking, reading and writing
Session 2: Writing with integrity
Session 3: Using AI for research writing
Session 4: Crafting an academic voice and arguments (writing within a discourse community)
Session 5: Introduction to academic writing; Process writing
Session 6: Sentences and paragraphs: the building blocks of academic writing (model approach)
Session 7: Creating coherence in academic writing
Session 8: Clarity, transitions, hedging and boosting
Session 9: Paraphrase and quotation
Session 10: Referencing
Session 11: Editing and revision
