The UNISA VIRTUAL RACE TO KEEP DEFINING TOMORROW is a campaign to raise funds for student learning devices. In a first of its kind, Unisa hopes to bring together its alumni, donors, staff members and their families to participate in a virtual race to help raise a third-stream income to enable the University to purchase learning devices for students.

The virtual race is guided by a fundraising priority programme to espouse the values of the University in line with its 2016 - 2030 strategy. It is a strategy Unisa adopted to make a shift to open, distance and ultimately an e-learning environment.

Unisa provides opportunities and hope to thousands of students who come from indigent backgrounds across the continent. The need for student support within the parameters of the University’s unique and transforming environment, continues to grow against the background of financial challenges faced by these students.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic many of them find themselves being far-removed from the university. Students are unable to continue effectively with their studies. This could contribute to high rates of drop-outs and stop-outs.

Approximately 150 000 Unisa students require such devices to enable them to study and to write exams.

We deliver education to approximately 400 000 students located in South Africa and around the world. We are the largest ODeL institution in Africa and the oldest distance education university in the world, which educates almost 35% of university students in South Africa and contributes an estimated 60 000 graduates into South Africa's labour force.
